The Biggest AdWords Mistake NOT to Make

August 13th, 2008 by admin

As advertisers, you know it’s basic to find your real target market.

For example, it’s not just young men between 18 and 34 who like sports- it may more specifically those who are online, have spent money online and make more than 50,000 a year.

Well for an adwords consultant like me, prospects include anyone who isn’t doing adwords optimally. And I’ve discovered that’s just about everybody who’s doing adwords.

Let’s forget about the advanced things we can do with reports, excel, optimizing ROAS, negative keywords, etc.

I’ve found that amongst clients some of the BASICS are still neglected.

What I’m thinking of, the most offensive thing right now, is the lack of conversion tracking.

If you haven’t installed conversion tracking code from adwords into your thank you page, you just don’t get it.

Google has a conflict of interests, you see- the more you pay for ads and the more clicks you generate, the more money they make. But still they want you to be happy, so they have plenty of help pages on increasing click through rate (CTR), tracking conversions, etc. And they certify AdWords Qualified Individuals (professionals) like me once we have a certain amount of experience and pass a rigorous third-party exam.

But you know what they don’t do? They don’t show the conversion rate of ads next to the CTR. You have to run a report to get that.

So you may end up deleting your more profitable ads. I’ve seen clients miss out on millions of dollars of revenue doing that.

But of course, if you haven’t installed conversion tracking, you won’t be able to make any decisions about profitability with adwords- whether it concerns ads or keywords.

Install conversion tracking?

Just do it.

Could You Be A Professional Blogger

August 2nd, 2008 by admin

Recently, I pointed out that blogging can be an excellent way for people to start earning with AdSense. It takes no effort at all to get a blog up and running on Blogger and you pretty much start with one ad well blended at the top of the page.

But there’s a difference between starting with AdSense and making a good income from it, and that’s really the goal, right? I’m sure that most bloggers who put ads on their sites would really like to see their entries making so much money that they can kick the day job and make their living as a professional blogger. They’d be getting paid to talk about their favorite topics, and what could be better than that?

There are some people online who do exactly that. But you’ve got to do a lot more than put one ad at the top of your Blogger site — however well-blended it might be — to become a professional blogger.

First, most professional bloggers run more than one blog. They often run several. They also talk about a lot more than their families and their points of view. They give valuable information that people can use in their own lives or their businesses, and best of all, they become the center of a community in which other people swap tips and ideas. So if they’re travel agents, they can write blogs that reveal how to find bargains. If they’re accountants, they can warn about hidden tax liabilities.

That’s valuable content aimed at a market that wants it.

And then there are the ads.

You could tell readers how to choose next week’s winning lottery numbers but if you don’t have ad units in the best places on the page and showing the sorts of ads your users will want to click, you won’t get a penny from the winnings. You’ll have to know how to make sure AdSense is serving the ads you want to receive. You’ll have to know how to make those ads stand out while still blending in. And you’ll have to know how to follow your stats so that you can leap on a drop in earnings as soon as it happens.

It’s a combination of creating valuable content, smart AdSense strategy and a good knowledge of Internet marketing too. Just get that — and it’s really not too hard — and you can be a professional blogger too.

Organize Your Adwords Account to Get More Visitors, Lower Your Cost Per Click and Increase ROI

July 28th, 2008 by admin

Keeping your Adwords account organized is very important. It can make it easy for you to find your Adgroups, keywords and your ads. This can help you save time whenever you need to adjust your bids, ads, or keywords. Being organized can also help you achieve a higher clickthrough rate (CTR) which means getting the searcher clicking on your ad and becoming a prospect.

Organize your account by starting with a campaign name relevant to your product or service. If you were selling inkjet cartridges you could use that as the campaign name or the name of your website as the campaign name.

Set up your ad groups so that they are themed. If you were advertising inkjet cartridges and one of the products you are selling is canon inkjet cartridges you could create an adgroup titled “Canon Inkjet Cartridges” and then place relevant keywords in this group.

Ad Group Name: Canon Inkjet Cartridges
Keywords: canon inkjet cartridges, canon ink, canon cartridges, canon inkjet cartridges online

Two reasons for keeping your adgroups organized and themed like this are it is easy to find and adjust the keywords as necessary. It is easy to to put the keyword in the title and body of your ad.

It is important to put the keyword in the title and ad because you will achieve a much higher click through rate (CTR)

If you used the above ad with the keywords in the example your ad would be relevant to the searchers and the keywords in the ad would appear bold to the searchers catching their eye.

Let’s recap what you just learned. The bold text catches the eye of the searcher. The keyword is relevant to what they are looking for thus increasing the chances of you getting the visitor to your website instead of your competitor getting the visitor.

One thing you need to be careful of however is using a trademarked word in your title, description, or as a keyword. Some companies allow you to do this while other companies don’t. When in doubt either don’t use the trademarked term or contact the company and ask them for permission.

One other advantage of having themed adgroups is that Google rewards relevancy. This can improve your quality score and actually reduce the cost that you pay for the click. Your Ad’s position will improve. You will get a lower cost per customer acquisition (CPA), a higher clickthrough rate (CTR), more profit and a higher return of investment (ROI).
